It all began around 2:35 a.m. in South Hackensack Sunday, Oct. 13, when officers were called to a Route 46 business for a crash and report of a stolen vehicle, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

The car, which had been stolen out of New York City during an armed carjacking, was found abandoned as the driver fled and tried to steal another car, but was unsuccessful, Musella said. He eventually stole a different vehicle at gunpoint and fled the scene before police arrived.

A short time later, the vehicle carjacked from the business in South Hackensack was found disabled on the George Washington Bridge. Officers from the Port Authority Police Department responded and found the suspect, who had a knife and attacked the officers, the prosecutor said. He also tried to steal a police patrol vehicle during the confrontation.

The suspect was ultimately apprehended, taken to a local area hospital, and remains in custody pending charges. Further details and the suspect’s identity are being withheld at this time while initial criminal charges are filed in Bergen County Superior Court and additional investigative steps are completed.

As a result of the incident on the George Washington Bridge where the suspect produced a knife, three Port Authority Police Department officers were treated at a local area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released.
